Grassroots Leyning

Dearest Grassroots Tribe

Would YOU like to be one of the people who reads from the Torah this year?

One of the truly phenomenal aspects of GRJ is that it is WE THE PEOPLE, the whole community, who create and lead the services; and this includes all of the reading from the Torah.

Over the last few years we’ve helped many men and women read from the Torah for the first time. This year, we are again inviting you to be a part of this rewarding, collective enterprise, even if you’ve done it before.

There are 26 aliyot – sections of the Torah to be sung – throughout both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur that we need volunteers for, so there’s plenty for anyone who wants to be called up!

And to help you learn those sections we have a range of resources.

• Each section has been recorded and is available on line so you can download it, and practice by singing along at home.
• We are blessed to have two phenomenal leyning coaches (male and female) who can help give you more personal tuition and support.
• We have digital copies of the traditional text without vowels so you can practice reading the less familiar calligraphy found on a Torah scroll.
• We’ve even recorded the blessings and collated videos of how to perform them, so anyone can feel confident, relaxed and familiar with that part of the service on the day.

But what if I can’t read Hebrew?

We would love to find a way to help you learn but there are also other prayers which are in English which might suit you better this year (and give us a year to help you learn to read so that you’ll be ready to read from the Torah by 2015).

To aid you in your learning, we have a selection of recordings, kindly provided especially for Grassroots by master teacher Chani Smith. An alternative set of recordings as well as blessings before and after the Torah readings, have been kindly provided by Sam Klein.

Next Steps
