Food Glorious Food! Potluck Meals @ GRJ

Here’s all you need to know about food @ GRJ this year. There is a kiddush provided mid-service to keep us all going, and a communal ‘bring a dish pot-luck’ lunch at 2pm when services end!

Please *carefully* read the information below…

As many of you who have attended Grassroots events before will know, our beautiful community will be organizing and creating Lunch, for both days of Rosh Hashanna, via a “Potluck” system. As a community we will *together* provide all the yummy food & drink that will nourish us over the festive days!

Because there are simply so many of us, we need a little bit more direction than normal to ensure that we don’t simply end up with 3000 pots of humous!

Thus, we have divided up the roles according to the first letter of our first names. [Eg Julia Smith will be “J”.]

Please note that there are different roles for each of us for each of the days.

E.g. You may be asked to bring e.g. a salad for the first day and then e.g. drinks for the second day.

If you are only attending lunch on one day, simply bring with the food/ drink according to that specific day’s requests. Don’t worry about the other day that you’re not attending!

Please do ensure that the food is either strictly vegetarian or supervised kosher (and vegetarian). Wine does not have to be kosher, although it would be appreciated if it could be.

PLEASE CLEARLY LABEL your food with one of the following:

1st Day Lunch

2nd Day Lunch

If your food ALSO happens to be either dairy or gluten free, then please label it as such– our lactose/gluten intolerant friends will be forever grateful! Please also label foods that contain nuts.

PLEASE CLEARLY LABEL your plastic boxes (both the lids and bases) so that the kitchen angels can keep track of your belongings. Otherwise we won’t know how to divide up the enormous amounts of food!

Some hot plates will be available and the kitchen angles will do their very best to ensure that everything that needs heating is rotated on the hotplates – we cannot guarantee that anything will be ‘piping hot’. If you would like your food heated, make sure that it is brought in a suitable container. The oven will not be on so please don’t bring anything that needs cooking (eg frozen pizzas).

**PLEASE NOTE** There will not be a lot of free space in the kitchen, so please don’t bring anything that needs a lot of preparation , such as unassembled salads, whole pineapples etc.

Questions? Feel free to call Miri on 07887 651202 or email her at

  1. Do you need to know exactly what we are bringing in our letter group or is it “pot luck” you don’t get 50 quiches for example?!!

      • Hi Pippa – there is a system on the blog which works alphabetically based on the letters of your names..Looking forward to seeing you then! J xx

  2. Hi, I am confused on the days – Day 1 is Thursday and day two is Friday, aren’t they? The above says Monday and Tuesday, and else where on the blog day two is labelled Thursday… thanks for the clarification!

    • Hi there,
Thanks for pointing this out – the food schedule was copied from last year when RH was Mon & Tues. Now amended to Thurs and Fri.
Shana Tova and look forward to seeing you there!
